7101 Procedures for Declaring Accompanied Personal Effects to Customs (FAQ)

When entering or returning to Japan, you are required to declare about your belongings obtained in foreign countries by submitting a customs declaration form (Declaration of Accompanied Articles and Unaccompanied Articles)
If you have unaccompanied articles, two copies of the declaration form are required. (Be sure to declare it upon entering Japan because you cannot declare it after entry.)
Japan Customs recommends submitting declarations electronically via the“Visit Japan Web”for smooth customs procedures.

Customs allows a simplified customs procedures called “Customs clearance for traveler’s baggage” for passengers’ personal belongings to a certain extent.
In the case that you bring commercial cargo or costly goods into Japan, you may be required to take the same import procedures as those for the general cargo.
When you declare for consigned articles or you need import permit for accompanied or unaccompanied articles, you are required to submit customs declaration form, as well as two copies of “Export/Import Declaration for Consigned Articles” and other documents necessary for customs clearance to Customs. After the import permit, one copy will be issued as a permit.
