9009 For Overseas Travelers (Notification System for the Importation of Animals)
“ Notification System for the Importation of Animals” ,which is based on the Act on the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Medical Care for Patients with Infectious Diseases, is intended to prevent infections derived from imported animals.
Under the system, the following animals that have been taken out of Japan or purchased overseas cannot be imported into Japan. However, it may be possible to import them by obtaining a health certificate issued by the government authorities of the exporting country and completing notification procedures at a Japanese quarantine station.
For details, please contact the quarantine station that has jurisdiction over the arriving port or airport.
【Animals : requiring import notifications】
- Live terrestrial mammals (excluding domestic animals, dogs, cats, raccoons, foxes, skunks)
- Live birds (excluding poultry)
- Carcasses of rodents
Examples:
- Terrestrial mammals: ferrets, hedgehogs, suger gliders, hamsters, etc.
- Birds: parrots, parakeets, pigeons, Java sparrows, etc.
In addition, the following animals are banned to be imported into Japan as they are highly likely to cause infection to humans.
(Except in the case where the permission is granted by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.)

Ferret badger, Bat, Monkeys, Raccoon-dog, Masked palm civet, Prairie dog,and Mastomys natalensis
