- Statistical Code (9 digits)
In Japan, the 9-digit statistical codes are used for commodity classification in Customs declarations. Therefore, "Commodity" means the item classified based on this 9-digit statistical code. The 9-digit statistical code consists of 6-digit HS code and 3-digit domestic code. The 6-digit HS code is internationally harmonized under the HS Convention (International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System), and used for both export and import. Hence, based on 6-digit HS code, Trade Statistics of Japan can be compared with those of foreign countries. The 3-digit domestic codes for exports and imports are not always the same. Therefore, the 9-digit statistical code lists for exports and imports are different. 9-digit statistical code lists - Principal Commodity Code
