5. Guidance on import declaration

Post items sent from overseas with a customs value exceeding 200,000 yen require a general import (tax) declaration at the customs office (Tokyo Overseas Mail Sub-branch Customs, etc.) holding jurisdiction over the customs area where the item is stored (Japan Post office).

The import declaration procedure may be commissioned to Japan Post or other customs brokers. The import declaration procedure may also be conducted in person at the customs office. Please inform Tokyo Overseas Mail Sub-branch Customs who will receive the customs declaration.

If the addressee wishes to conduct the import declaration in person, please prepare the invoice and other documents necessary for import (tax) declaration and inform Customs of the date when you will visit in advance.
