The duties and taxes are higher than I expected
Q The duties and taxes are higher than I expected.
A Imported postal items are subject to duty and taxes(national consumption tax and local consumption tax), except where tax exemptions or reductions apply. The duty and tax rates vary depending on the characteristics, materials, usage and country of origin of items.
Regarding customs duties, while some items are duty-free (e.g., watches, auto parts, electronic equipment), some items have high tariff rates, such as fur products (e.g., coats), which are subject to a 20% duty rate, and leather shoes, which are subject to a higher rate of either 30% duty or 4,300 yen per pair.
If you have any questions about taxation upon mail delivery, please inform the mail carrier that you would like to check with Customs regarding the tax details, put a hold on your mail pickup, and contact Tokyo Overseas Mail Sub-branch Customs indicated in the upper right corner of the Notice of Assessment of Duties and Taxes Postal Matters.
Please note that once the taxes are paid and the mail is received(imported), it is no longer under the control of Customs and the post office, so it cannot be proven that the item was imported, and the taxes cannot be returned(refunded).
