I want to return a jacket I bought from a foreign website because it doesn’t fit. Can I get refund?
Q I would like to return a jacket that I bought from a foreign mail-order website because it doesn’t fit me.
Is it possible to get a refund of the duties and taxes that I paid at the time of import?
A When returning(exporting) purchased goods to the seller, you can receive a refund of duties and taxes that you paid at the time of import by following the necessary procedures.
If you wish to return goods by postal mail, you must come to the nearest customs office in advance to present the required documents and the goods to be returned, and undergo customs inspection before sending them by mail.
(You can do this procedure at other customs offices, as well as Tokyo Overseas Mail Sub-branch Customs in the International Post Office.)
Please note that if you send the mail without following the necessary procedures, you cannot receive a refund for the duties and taxes that you paid at the time of import.
If you wish to return goods by methods other than postal mail, please contact the customs office with jurisdiction over the bonded area where the items to be returned are stored, or the carrier/customs broker which handled the transportation and customs clearance of the items.
