Can I check the contents of my parcels by myself?

I received a “Notice of Customs Clearance Procedure for Postal Matters from Abroad”. Can I check the contents of my parcels by myself?

Yes, you can.
The addressee themselves may come to the customs office in the international post office where the mail is stored and check the contents of the mail in the presence of customs officials and postal employees.

If you plan to visit the customs office, please call Tokyo Overseas Mail Sub-branch Customs in advance to reduce congestion and waiting time at the customs counter.

When you come to the office, please remember to bring the following items:
≫“Notice of Customs Clearance Procedure for Postal Matters from Abroad”
≫Identification (e.g., Driving License, My Number Card, Residence card)
  • For corporate postal items, Employee ID cards or a Name cards are also acceptable forms of identification.

If the recipient cannot visit the customs office and delegates the content inspection to a representative, a Power of Attorney is required.
Any form or format is acceptable for the Power of Attorney, but be sure to include the following information:
≫Date of Power of Attorney
≫Name and address of the mandator (addressee of the mail)
≫Name and address of the representative (person coming to the office)
≫Details of delegated authority
  1. Ex1 “Authority for Contents Check, Notification No. 12345” (or postal number)
  2. Ex2 “Authority for Customs Procedure, Notification No.12345” (or postal number)

※If the power of attorney is prepared on a computer, it must be signed or stamped by the person who is giving the power of attorney. If a representative comes to the office, please also bring the “Notice of Customs Clearance Procedure for Postal Matters from Abroad” and identification, etc.
